CBP BOAT DEMO

THE CHALLENGE

Integrated Mission and Operations Analysis director John Lillard needed a way to visualize how distance, weather, and other environmental factors affect someone's ability to identify a Customs and Border Patrol boat on the water.

John and the Studio team agreed that he would need a dynamic and portable solution to suit his presentation needs - and we had a limited amount of time to create it.

OUR PROCESS

With a specific use-case in mind, we began developing an interactive 3D environment within the Unity game engine.  This allowed us to combine off-the-shelf solutions and custom created functionality that would suit the specific needs of this project.

We quickly created a prototype and were able to get feedback from subject matter experts on John's team.  We then focused on iterating design features and functionality - like adding zoom, night vision, and multiple camera views.

Continuing to work closely with John's team, we developed a number of solutions to quickly present more information about the operational environment to the target audience - including the ability to save custom presets and cycle through them from the user interface.

In order to more accurately represent what someone would see from the deck of a boat, the issue of scale had to be addressed.  This area of the project led to the development of a key feature that we call "TrueScale." TrueScale is a way of accurately representing the real-world size of a digital scene on any monitor display.

RESULTS

The finished product is a great training aid, and overall the team did a fantastic job. I wouldn’t hesitate to continue working with them, or work with them again in the future.

This product is used to help articulate scenarios for requirements development for field operators, and may be used in the future for virtual training scenarios when operational training is not possible.  It's web-accessible, and allows users to adjust parameters with an easy to use interface.  Just by visiting a URL, the MOA group can present a dynamic and interactive visualization of an operational environment.

Interactive features include:

  • Time of day
  • Weather
  • Sea state
  • Boat distance, heading, and orientation
  • Multiple camera views
  • Zoom/night vision
  • Custom presets
